What are third party inspection? Third party inspections are inspections, testing and evaluations made by an independent party, usually hired by the owner of property under construction or required by the buyer products, to ensure that construction, manufacturing, production or services provided meet the quality standards agreed upon under contract.

Various standards may include state and local building codes and ordinances, codes and standards established by organizations such as AISC, RCSC, AWS, ASME, ISO, ASTM, or OEM standards. There are many standards and codes that might apply depending on the industry being served.

Third party inspections are different than first party inspection, which is performed in-house by a contractor or manufacturer. Often this is considered Quality Control. Or Second party inspections, usually performed in-house by the owner or owner’s representative or the buyer. Often considered more of a Quality Assurance role, but limited in scope.

Third party inspections combines the more detailed inspections, tests, evaluations usually performed by quality control inspectors, with the overall quality assurance objectives as well. Only third party inspections are accepted as the reasonable assurance that the quality of materials, workmanship and/or processes meet the design requirements, and applicable codes and specifications. This benefits all parties, including the public. Often this is required by building departments, or state and federal regulatory bodies, or may be requested by a buyer.
